January 1931 saw the Society debate "That in the opinion of this House the immediate return to power of a Conservative Government is essential to the social and economic welfare of the country." The motion was defeated. Rather ironically, the 1960s saw famous Conservative figures Ken Clarke, Norman Lamont, Michael Howard and Leon Brittan all serve as officers of the Society whilst at Cambridge.
