WelcomeWelcome to the website of the 2009/10 Cambridge Union Schools' Debating Competition. The competition is one of the largest debating competitions in the world- last year, more than 1,500 students participated in what has now become the UK's largest competition of its kind. Students of all ages are welcome to take part, although teams are most commonly composed of students between Years 11 and 13. This year promises to be an extremely exciting one, with a team of 20 organisers currently working around the clock to ensure the 2009/10 competition is the biggest and best in its history. In addition to providing the services offered last year, including first and second rounds held in your local area on a date that suits you, there are a number of new initiatives we're introducing this year, which we hope will only serve to improve your experience:
We remain absolutely committed to ensuring all schools, regardless of their financial position, are able to take part - thus, we will fully fund the participation of all teams who cannot get financial support elsewhere, including covering the cost of your travel to rounds. Finally, do not be put of if you have not entered the competition in the past - last year, some of our most successful teams were those who were new to the competition, and we will provide all the support you need to do well if you're entering for the first time. This includes the opportunity to attend one of our debating workshops taking place all over the country in September. By clicking on the links on the left hand side, you'll be able to find out everything you need to know about the competition, from the benefits of entering to more detailed logistics. Essentially, though, we want you to enter because we genuinely believe it's one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things you can get involved in whilst at school - an activity where you are rewarded for speed and depth of thought on some of the most important issues facing society today. To enter, please register. Additionally, do feel free to contact us if you have absolutely any questions - we''re here to do whatever we can to help you get the most from the experience. I look forward to having you in the competition this year and, on behalf of the whole organisational team, wish you the very best of luck. Sam Dobin |
