DebatingDebating is one of the most important parts of the Union. If you're interested in improving your public speaking skills or discussing ideas that affect our world, this could be the activity for you. Through our workshop programme, you can learn from our expert coaches how to debate. You could also represent the Society at competitions held nearly every week. If you're interested, have a look at the other pages here or contact the Debating Officers. Cambridge are the 2009 English debating champions!Doug Cochran and Uven Chong won this year's ESU Mace, the English debating championships. In a competition involving over 60 teams from across England, Doug and Uven won the final, debating whether or not citizen initiated referenda for elections should be introduced. Uven, a PhD student studying Engineering said "I am very happy that we were able to win the English Mace for the Cambridge Union. This win is a result of the support of all the wonderful debaters and coaches at the Union, who make debating such a pleasure." They now go on to represent England at the International Mace at Cardiff in April.
